The bedrock at Purgatory Chasm, Granite Gneiss, formed during the NeoProterozoic age. This was about 1 billion to 500 million years ago. The Laurentide Ice Sheet, which helped create the Chasm, passed over the area about 21000 to 18000 years ago.
